An astonishing interview on Nick Luck’s daily podcast is worth listening to (Ep 1443 - Repole lets rip as lawsuits fly)

Apart from the language, which is very “Deadwood” if you know what I mean, it is a catalogue of an enormously rich man’s dissatisfaction with the entire federal, statewide, and international racing authorities’ views on the way the US racing industry is managed. Picking one’s way through his many, many arguments and woes, and paraphrasing them, he does seem to have some valid points.

It’s an interesting listen, and unusually, I’m not going to comment just yet, as I’d like to make some comparisons first, between some of his targets and our own setup.

I have always thought that anyone who “crosses the floor” of the House should automatically have to restand for election. It is legal nonsense that flies in the face of reality: the electorate votes for Sid Snot not because he is a good egg, in other words, voting for the Person rather than the party. Other than his Green boyfriend, mother and two mates from the Morris Dancing Club, everyone else voted for him because he was representing the Socialists R Lovely party. Leave that party, and you must call a by-election. Of course, one would have to consider the system for people who lose their party’s whip or who are suspended… I say this regardless of the parties involved. This is purely a moral case for fairer democracy and true representation.
