Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler, whose imperious march to Olympic gold medal glory last week made for compelling viewing, and well done to Tommy Fleetwood, who played magnificent golf to emerge with the silver medal. This week's tournament will inevitably be the damp squib after the fireworks. With so many perennial no-hopers in the field, it has been challenging to develop a credible shortlist; recent event winners have tended to be “roughies,” so I have settled on mostly long-priced selections.
Sedgefield is a Par-70 Donald Ross-designed parkland course that offers a fair test and rewards players who favour accuracy over distance off the tee and are good scramblers around its small undulating greens. With the FedEx Cup playoffs looming, players will jostle for position to eventually secure a place in the Tour Championship at the end of this month.
