I was at a dreadful lunch on Friday — great people, appalling food — listening to a former International Polo player aged 92 tell a funny, risqué story. No one is going to cancel a 92 yo for being inappropriate… surely? As if to prove the point, as I munched in Pall Mall, over in Taipei, at the World Master Games, Sawang Janpram, (the pronunciation is apparently phonetic) aged 105, won four athletic gold medals. There were apparently almost 26,000 contestants across the many disciplines, but only one in the 100+ age category for 100m, shot put, discus, and javelin.
I find myself thinking; “That could have been me… if only …”
When is sexism not discriminatory? I’m in a pickle. Recently, I wrote that Rachel Blackmore’s retirement was a massive shame. I said that I also thought it's understandable, and that she was retiring at the top of her game, a Titan of the jockey sphere. Then this week, Ascot announced they would ditch the Shergar Cup Ladies team, (which has won four of the last six runnings since being introduced), and replace it with an Asian team. Hollie Doyle said Huzzah, and Hayley Turner said What a Shame.
This will mean the Shergar Cup has four teams: Asia, Rest of The World, Europe and GB & Ireland.
Should I say Her? Should I be concerned that there isn’t an African team? Who decided that Hong Kong was the Rest of The World and not Asia? Is Australia in Australasia, Asia, or Rest of The World? Where do the Americans fit in? Am I too woke for being concerned, or not woke enough for mentioning it? And as Hayley commented:
