The appalling, ongoing gloom of daily life in Blighty, was made so much brighter this week by several Random Acts of Kindness (or RAKs) to the Editor. Firstly, he received a brace of Get Well cards, which joined a number of Wassup and emailed thoughts of support.

But a card is somehow special… and notably expensive!

Crikey, a stamp alone these days is £1.70. Were you to send 45 letter or cards in a year, it would be the equivalent, lest we forget, of our annual subscription… if one disregards the actual cost of stationery. And cards, I mean Lumme, even an ordinary card containing a doodle in the manner of Picasso on Ketamine, is £3.00. If it has a message, or is even vaguely amusing, the price can shoot up to around £4.50. This, of course, depends on where you buy the card from. If you buy it at a petrol station or motorway services shop, you’ll pay more. This is because they know that you’re trapped. The only reason you’re buying the card there is that you forgot to buy it at the posh card shop next to the office. There is unlikely to be another place to get a card before you get home and if the card is a birthday or anniversary memento, they can charge you what they like. After all it’s nuts or card… it’s your call.

Anyway, my Get Well cards, were pukka, charming, witty and regarded with deep affection.

The next RAK was a bottle of very decent wine from The Wine Society, with the imperative to “Get better soon.” A follow-up suggested that the wine was excellent with sausages. Sadly, I have to part company with my extraordinarily kind donor, as I regard all but the Toulouse Sausage, as a breakfast dish.
