Before I go any further, might I take this opportunity to thank you all for the many kind wishes and messages I have received. All will be well ~ it’ll just be a bore for a month.

It is quite difficult to see, on the racing front, where anything went right yesterday. A hefty treble for banking, a Trixie for income, and some long shots that if successful might have kept one in bread and dripping.

But no. Starvation looms. Penury beckons. Worse, the few shreds of reputation that had been carefully nurtured over the last few months, with profits, banking, food on the table and even the occasional iced sherbet, were all shredded in the Knavesmire mincer in less than 100 minutes.

Perhaps the problem was an over-abundance of confidence. I really thought that treble was nailed on. Madame, did well, natch. She backed the pacemaker at 60/1 for 3 places with Bet365. She asked me to keep smiling and keep my leg up. Likewise, she had also backed Jess Harringtons’s Saratoga Special
